LISD to offer free breakfast and lunch for the rest of the school year; LEEF pays off all negative meal balances

Thanks to a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Leander ISD will begin offering free breakfast and lunch to all students, both virtual and in-person, beginning Monday, Nov. 2.

All free meals ordered in person or online will include the same components: one entrée, one choice of milk, and the student’s choice of fruit and vegetables at both breakfast and lunch. Items not included in the free benefits include second meals, additional entrees and milk, and any à la carte snack items. Menus, service standards, and à la carte items will stay the same.

There are several options for families who have meal balances in their account:

  • Leave balance in the account to purchase à la carte items (recommended)
  • Allow remaining balance to roll over to next year
  • Request a refund by following the instructions under “Request a Refund” on our Child Nutrition Services webpage.

To further support LISD families, the Leander Educational Excellence Foundation (LEEF) is paying off all negative meal balances for the district. LEEF’s contribution of more than $11,224 benefits 1,579 children and allows the district to no longer send negative meals balance notifications to families.
