The Leander Virtual Learning Academy

Interest for Fall 2021

What is it?

The Virtual Learning Academy is an online school in which all participants will transfer to, participate in, and graduate from an LISD online four-year high school program hosted at New Hope High School.

Who is it for?

The Leander VLA will be available to Leander ISD 9th- and 10th-grade students starting in Fall 2021. It will grow into a full four-year program by adding a grade each year.

Is Enrollment limited?

Yes. A limited number of students will be accepted into the VLA. Students who complete the application process will be selected in a lottery process that will take place in April 2021. Any student who is not able to obtain a spot at the VLA will continue enrollment at their home campus. Students who are considering the VLA should still go through the normal course selection process for their current LISD High School in addition to an application for the VLA.

What courses will be available?

Students in the VLA will be on track to receive a multidisciplinary endorsement and will graduate from the Virtual Learning Academy at New Hope High School. A sample four year plan is as follows:

  • Electives for 10th– through 12th-grade students are still being selected and will be limited in number and broad in interest.
  • Students would choose 7 courses per year.
  • The PE course will be asynchronous.
  • All courses would be offered as on-level or advanced where available and with interest.

Can I participate in extracurricular activities at my neighborhood home campus?

No. The Leander VLA will be an online school independent of our other six comprehensive high schools. Students will not be enrolled at their “home” campus but will transfer to the VLA through New Hope High School.

Students wishing to participate in extracurricular activities, such as band, choir or athletics, will not be good candidates for the VLA. As mentioned above, students who wish to participate in a specialized sequence of CTE courses should not apply to the VLA.

What are the requirements at home to participate?

Students will need internet access to participate in the program as well as a computer – either a personal computer or one obtained through mLISD.

How do I get more information?

Leander ISD is currently planning and creating the VLA. If a student is interested in transferring to the VLA for the 2021–2022 school year, please this interest form to receive information as decisions are made. Filling out this form does not commit you to the VLA nor guarantee your acceptance.

We encourage you to fill out the interest form, but should you have any questions please direct contact to Terri McClain at
